Five Myths About…Fisting

It’s the punchline to a dirty joke, and a word said with a shudder, but fisting is an intense pleasure. Let’s dispel some myths about fisting –

1. Only hardcore gay men do it – This is a myth that came from the porn industry and some gay urban areas in the 60’s and 70’s, and it seems to have stuck. As with most things, there is nothing new under the sun, and fisting has been around far longer than the Castro District. Though, to be fair, it seems as if that is when it was popularized in modern culture. Fisting, however, is something both men and women can enjoy (women, both vaginally and anally).

2. Fisting will damage/ loosen the vagina/ sphincter – Most people know that a vagina will shrink back to size after a few hours or days, but the sphincter is also designed to relax and move large objects through it. The key is to use plenty of lube, go slowly, and insert one finger at a time – if you jam things into either of these orifices you will damage them and that is painful and unnecessary. Done right (and don’t do it if you don’t think you can do it right), it will not damage anything.

3. Fisting hurts – Again, I must refer to the line “Doing it Correctly” – this is not a pain activity (like, say, impact play or needle play), and if you feel intense pain, you should stop immediately. That being said, it can be uncomfortable during – though it should be outweighed by the pleasure you get – 953752825_baed46c88dand there can be soreness after. There are three rules to remember in fisting; 1) Lube 2) Lube! 2) LUBE!!! When it comes to vaginal fisting, warming up the vagina with dildos or sex can help, and always, always go slowly.

4. Fisting uses fists – No! Despite the name, you shouldn’t try to make a fist. Remember when we used to make shadow puppets and we always made a  duck bill? No? Just me? Anyway, imagine that and you have an idea of what your hand will look like when it is all inserted.  I present you the image to the right for a handy reference.

5. It’s gross – Yes, maybe. But there are some precautions you can take. If you are doing anal fisting, make sure to clean thoroughly and for vaginal fisting, make sure to empty your bladder first. Use gloves and a towel or chuck to catch the extra lube, and be prepared for squishy sounds. Thought with all of that together, I don’t find any grosser than normal, hetero sex; and if you think about it, sex is kind of gross. But it’s also amazing, and fisting can be too. With this activity you can have an amazing orgasm, since the hand puts pressure on the g-spot/ prostate. I urge you to give it a try.
